Al decirte que admiro tu trabajo y me solidarizo
contigo por lo que te ha tocado enfrentar (yo también he desafiado
"el orden" y me ha caído encima el fundamentalismo religioso),
te envío un artículo (en texto y también adjunto en formato
RTF) que publiqué hoy en mi columna en el diario Siglo Veintiuno de
Guatemala... para tu acervo. Más tarde puedo enviarte, transcritos,
los dos comentarios a los que ahí hago referencia, sobre "Nuestra
Señora".

LA CUESTIÓN DEL RESPETO

El 26 de junio, el diario El Periódico
publicó un comentario de Susana de Valdez (A-1 498765), al que siguió
otro que le hace eco, de Ari Castañeda (A-1 656430), el día
29. Ambas critican que la publicación feminista La Cuerda incluyera,
en su edición de junio, la producción "Nuestra Señora",
de la artista Alma López. Su indignación se debe a que la imagen
es de una mujer semidesnuda, con flores cubriéndole los senos y toda
el área de las caderas.
El comentario de Susana de Valdez no fue sorpresa:
ella había llamado un par de veces a la Asociación La Cuerda
para deplorar la publicación de esa imagen y, de paso (en el clásico
estilo de la religiosidad recalcitrante), lanzar improperios contra quienes
respondieron sus llamadas. Tampoco fue sorpresa que alguien dijera algo en
Guatemala respecto a dicha producción. La autora de ésta, mexicana
residente en California, expuso su obra en Santa Fe, Nuevo México,
y ha recibido comentarios similares a los de De Valdez y Castañeda.
De Valdez se pregunta cómo es posible
que a quienes producen La Cuerda "les ofenda que una modelo pose a medio
vestir para anunciar un auto, o que no estén de acuerdo con los concursos
de belleza, pues consideran que son formas de cosificar a la mujer, y que
luego resulten editando una fotografía como ésta".
Separemos el grano de la paja. Una cosa es la
publicidad abusiva y sexista (como la de la empresa REVENSA, del aguardiente
Venado y los helados Holanda, cuyas obvias sugerencias sexuales proliferan
por la ciudad), que cosifica y denigra a todo el género femenino al
utilizar cuerpos de mujeres con el fin único de promocionar productos
y aumentar sus ventas (sin que De Valdez o Castañeda se ofendan ni
manifiesten rechazo alguno). Muy diferente es presentar una obra de arte que
no tiene tal fin. Por supuesto, nunca faltan quienes perciben un "peligro"
en que la gente se entere que una santa o santo era, después de todo,
un ser humano que tenía un cuerpo bajo la túnica.
De Valdez plantea que publicar tal imagen denigra
a la Virgen de Guadalupe y, por tanto, "a toda mujer". Vale decir,
sin embargo, que entre las casi 20 mil personas que leen La Cuerda, muchas
de ellas mujeres, sólo dos protestaron por esa publicación.
Es lógico deducir que la mayoría de lectoras y lectores no comparte
tal indignación.
En sus más de tres años de exitosa
existencia, La Cuerda ha hecho una necesaria e inequívoca defensa de
los derechos de las personas, en particular de las mujeres, la niñez
y la juventud, grupos que nunca han contado con espacios suficientes ni adecuados
en los medios tradicionales. Muchas lectoras han expresado que, de todas las
publicaciones escritas en Guatemala, ésa es la única que leen
"de cabo a rabo" porque se sienten plenamente identificadas con
sus contenidos.
Quizás eso se deba a que La Cuerda no
se anda con medias tintas y es justamente respeto lo que se evidencia en cada
una de sus páginas. A De Valdez y Castañeda les ofende, como
católicas, que esta vez se haya publicado una imagen que les pareció
"denigrante", pero nunca se han tomado un momento para escribir
algo acerca de 35 ediciones en las que La Cuerda ha defendido también
los derechos de ellas.
¿Por qué la indignación?
Quizás por una percepción errada acerca de lo que es el respeto.
El "respeto" al que esas comentaristas se refieren tal vez sea el
que dicta que a la patrona le llamen "señora", mientras a
la empleada de la casa se le trata de "vos", se le paga un salario
de muerte y no goza de beneficio alguno. Y posiblemente sea el mismo "respeto"
que manda callar los abusos sexuales que ocurren en tantos hogares.
Si fuera "respetuoso" presentar sólo
imágenes vestidas hasta el cuello para que nadie se ofenda, más
fácil sería la tarea. Y fritas estaríamos, porque por
mantener el concepto tradicional del "respeto", muchas otras cosas,
más allá de un trozo de piel, seguirían ocultas.

por la inclusión (con el crédito correspondiente) de tu obra

Junto con el diario el Periódico del
domingo recibí el segundo número de La Cuerda que aparentaba
ser un anexo del mismo. Aunque ustedes no lo editan lo están distribuyendo,
apadrinando y difundiendo, por lo que indirectamente son también responsables
de lo que esta gente presenta al público.
Las personas que editan La Cuerda se autodefienden
como feministas, lo que en un principio me pareció interesante ya que
en un país de analfabetas es muy positivo que cada día más
mujeres tengan la instrucción necesaria para expresar sus opiniones
en un medio escrito. Sin embargo, tanto por ser mujer como por ser católica
me repugnó grandemente la fotografía en que se le falta el respeto
a la Virgen de Guadalupe. No sé si las personas de La Cuerda son ateas,
gnósticas o tengan otra religión, pero nada les da derecho a
faltar el respeto de esa forma a una mujer tan querida y venerada por una
porción tan alta de las mujeres de Guatemala.
Cómo es posible que les ofenda que una
modelo pose a medio vestir para anunciar un auto, o que no estén de
acuerdo con los concursos de belleza, pues consideran que son formas de cosificar
a la mujer, y que luego resulten editando una fotografía como ésta.
Estas supuestas defensoras de la mujer le faltan el respeto a María
de Nazareth, una Mujer que no escribió nada, pero que tuvo la valentía
de estar de pie junto a la cruz de su hijo, que supo ser ejemplo para todos
con el testimonio de su vida intachable con la que enaltece a toda mujer.
Atacándola de esta forma no hacen más que traicionar a las que
se supone deberían estar defendiendo. Denigrándola, denigran
a toda mujer.Falta de respeto en ‘La Cuerda’

Acerca de la revista La Cuerda, manifiesto mi total rechazo a la ilustración de la Virgen de Guadalupe y, siendo un suplemento femenino, considero muy oportuna la carta de Susana de Valdez. A católicos como nuestra familia nos da pena que tengan necesidad de utilizar nuestra fe y creencias con propósitos mundanos y comerciales. Por favor no publiquen semejante insulto.

lots of it--from those who love our Lord Jesus Christ and from those who don't.
And all I see is the devil hovering above you, but don't despair because Christ is
here, too. Remember: "I am with you always!" So
what that you messed up numerous times--with the guys, the girls, the man
Himself and yes even the devil himself. Guess what--you are no different
than anyone else on this blessed earth, with the exception of course of our
Lady, the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Most Holy, and her son, our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ. Now tell us Satan--Was it just right here where
you started hurting us? Our egos? That we are imperfect and they,
humans like us, are perfect and better than us? Why didn't you tell
us that we can be like them, Mary and Jesus, eventually one day, if we stay
close to them, if we remain on the vine that is Jesus Christ, God became man,
the incarnate, like you told Eve, our first mother? Perhaps you too,
are afraid of God, aren't you? Because you told Eve that she would become
like God, knowing what is good and what is evil.
Very well, Alma. I won't continue; but, remember that God does love
you, although he is hurt and upset at what you're doing because you are
his, and it hurts Him to see you prostitute yourself with the devil.
Satan has a filthy mouth; he says bad words all the time. I recommend
you leave your brother, sister, mother, father (or daddy) and friends
behind, and go talk to Christ.
Pray lady because he loves you. Did you
know that as a human being, you are part of the body of the Christ.
Here you've taught me something already: Everything was made "through
him, with him, and in him," not just us. This includes
the plants, fish, ocean, land-- everything-- and yes, ESPECIALLY the
angels, too! They are created, too. And the devil was an angel,
although we no longer call him an angel because he chose not to obey God.
But the devil was the most beautiful of all angels--his name is Lucifer:
Angel of Light. But he decided that he did not want to obey God out
of jealousy--he did not like God's plan to become human--to become a lowly
creature, lower than the angels. Do you know why Alma? Because
Lucifer would have to bow down to a human being, to Jesus Christ. Because
every knee on heaven and earth shall bend at the name of Jesus Christ.
And, thus, Lucifer, Satan, was kicked out heaven by St. Michael the Archangel.
So there you have it. And remember: stay on the vine that is Jesus
Christ because he Himself said that the greatest man that ever lived,
St. John the Baptist, is the least in the kingdom of Heaven. And the
angels reside in heaven. We are lower than the angels, and He said that
when we die and go to heaven (if we do), we shall be like the angels.
I guess that means beautiful!!! Also remeber that Lucifer is no longer
in heaven, rather it is Christ who is on earth. Look, I don't profess
to know everything because not even Christ knows "the day and the
hour" of Judgement Day, but I do know that you should not be profaning
Holy things. The image of "Our Lady of Guadalupe" is a gift
from God. You should not have touched it. But you did! Please
note that I wholeheartedly believe that you have not done anything that God
did not know you would do. If I had done what you did, I would go to
Christ himself and Mary and ask forgiveness because they are the first ones
that you've offended (next to God, of course). And if I know the Lord,
he would provide a priest for me to confess my sins and receive absolution.
You still think God will not forgive you, don't you? It isn't true that
God wants you apart from all things good. You can take a knife and use
it to cut meat to satisfy your hunger, or you can also use a knife to take
a life, to kill someone, to satisfy your anger. "Seek ye first
the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added
unto you, Allelu, Allelujah," or so goes the song.

As a native of San Antonio I am very aware of
the presence of La Virgen. Her image is so pervasive that even though I am
not Hispanic, nor Catholic, I feel comforted by her image Personally, I do
not find your interpretation to be at all offensive. However, I do not find
that your rendition puts La Virgen in a position of strength. That being said,
I do understand the position of your detractors. You have forced them to try
and reconcile two very opposing views of women. On the one hand, they revere
their mothers as the purest expression of love. On the other, women are the
recipients of their most crude and base physical expressions. It is no wonder
that they recoil at the presence of this dichotomy in your art. I think that
they may also have seen your art as their opportunity to have their 15 minutes
of fame. It is amazing to me the causes that people will rally against, all
in the name of publicity. As an artist, this will not be the only time that
you will be challenged. I hope that you will be able to find the strength
to continue to use your gift as you feel compelled to do. Perhaps, La Virgen
will be ale to help you with that. God speed and good luck to you.

Dear Alma,
My name is Francis Villalpando, I had the pleasure
of meeting and working with you in 1999 when you exhibited your work at the
Joslyn Fine ARts Gallery, Torrance. I was and continue to be a gallery assistant
here, but my aspiration is to someday become a big shot curator, director,
researcher & promoter of Latino(a) art in California.
Currently I attend Cal State Long Beach and
am taking an excellent course on Latino immigration with Prof. Grace Delgado.
It is through research for this class (on Chicano Art & immigration issues,
for the final paper) that i've learned of the difficulties you've encountered
in Santa Fe due to the "Our Lady" piece. I completely agree that
no one, has a right to censor works of Art -- it completely defies the purpose
of having exhibitions of this nature that promote work by Latinas.
Anyways, after visiting your website and the
Museums' it looks like your piece is still on exhibit. But If you are still
collecting letters of support, I will be more than happy send out a few on
behalf of the Joslyn, just let me know. No doubt my research paper will have
to bring up such controversies & injustices that continue to take place
today.
